About Nadiya & Her Ukrainian Dolls
A Business Rooted in Love and Culture
My name is Nadiya, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way to Gift Emporium. This little store is more than just a business—it’s a piece of my heart, stitched together with threads of memory, tradition, and love. Every item you see here is connected to a long journey that began in Ukraine and brought me to Canada, where I now live with my family.

From Ukraine to Canada: A Family Journey
I was born and raised in Ukraine in a loving, middle-class household. My mother was a high school teacher of Ukrainian language and literature, and my father was an engineer. I grew up surrounded by Ukrainian traditions, music, and culture—playing violin and bandura, singing in school choirs, and learning folk songs that still echo in my mind.

Learning from My Babtsya
My great-grandmother, my beloved "babtsya," taught me how to sew, knit, and embroider. She shared stories about our ancestors and passed on the old ways that were rooted in our land, our seasons, and our spirit. The house I grew up in was filled with the scent of cloth and the warmth of needlework, all wrapped in family and tradition.

Building a New Life in Canada
In 2000, I immigrated to Canada after marrying a wonderful Canadian man with Ukrainian roots. Together we built a home full of laughter, traditions, and love—we have four children and five beautiful grandchildren. This family, especially my granddaughters, inspired the next chapter of my life.

Creating Meaningful Dolls with Ukrainian Spirit
The first dolls I made were for my granddaughters. I wanted them to have play dolls that weren’t just pretty, but meaningful—dolls with real faces, dressed in traditional costumes. Most Ukrainian Motanka dolls are faceless, but I wanted my creations to show emotion, personality, and joy. I use new dolls from the store and dress them in outfits I’ve hand-sewn and embroidered myself. These are more than just toys—they are symbols of culture, family, and the stories that bind us.
Ukrainian Embroidery, Patterns, and Regional Identity
What makes my dolls special are the hand-embroidered cross-stitch patterns, inspired by Ukrainian traditions. Some dolls represent different regions of Ukraine, like Bukovyna, Galychyna, and the Carpathian Mountains. Others are dressed for the seasons or wear modern Ukrainian embroidery. I even create ceremonial dolls, each one carrying its own meaning—many inspired by the lunar calendar, the full moon, and the cycle of life.
Dolls That Inspire Skill and Connection
My dolls help children develop fine motor skills and imagination. More importantly, they carry the spirit of our ancestors, who believed dolls had a protective function and could guard the house against evil spirits. Each one is created with love, fabric, and positive thoughts, often including symbolic elements like ribbons, cloth, and traditional accessories.
Inside My Magic Room: The Doll-Making Studio
My home studio—what I lovingly call my “magic room”—is filled with fabric, threads, and tools of the trade. I work with two Husqvarna sewing and embroidery machines, surrounded by shelves of fabric and tiny baskets of accessories. This space is where tradition and creativity come together. Every doll that leaves this studio is a luxury piece of art, created with care and respect for the culture I grew up in.
Handmade Ukrainian Embroidered Linens and Ornaments
With the tools in my studio, I also design kitchen linens featuring Ukrainian and Canadian embroidery. These pieces combine practicality with tradition, making every meal a little more special.
During the holidays, I also offer embroidered Christmas balls, featuring angels, geometric patterns, and winter scenes. These ornaments, like my dolls, are meant to bring the warmth of Ukraine into Canadian homes. They’re inspired by the moonlit winters of my childhood and the memories of decorating the house with my mother and grandmother.
Our Mission to Preserve Ukrainian Culture in Canada
Gift Emporium is more than a site for gifts—it’s a celebration of Ukrainian identity. Through every doll, every piece of cloth, and every stitch of embroidery, we honor the women before us. Motanka dolls, in particular, are deeply rooted in Ukrainian folklore. They represent the goddess, the mother, and the protective spirit of the home. Usually a woman, the Motanka doll has no face because she is not one person—she is all of us.
This site is my way of keeping those traditions alive for Ukrainian families in Canada and around the world. Whether you’re buying a doll for a girl in your family, decorating your house for the holidays, or simply connecting to your roots—I hope you find something here that brings beauty, joy, and pride into your life.
From my heart to your house, thank you for supporting this journey.
